How to read the result

A nonprofit that expends $1,000,000 or more in federal awards during a fiscal year beginning on or after October 1, 2024 must have a Single Audit (2 CFR 200.501). For fiscal years that began earlier, the threshold was $750,000. The test counts federal awards expended, including money received as a subrecipient through a state, county, or another organization.

USAspending.gov reports something different: obligations, the amounts federal agencies committed on direct awards. A three-year grant can be obligated in one year and spent over three, and pass-through subawards are reported separately and are often incomplete. That is why every verdict this tool gives is labeled Inferred rather than verified.

  • Likely at or above the threshold: direct obligations in one of the last two complete federal fiscal years met the threshold for that year.
  • Near the threshold: direct obligations reached $500,000 or more but stayed under the threshold.
  • Below the threshold on direct awards shown: direct obligations stayed under $500,000. Pass-through funding could still change the answer.

To confirm whether an organization actually filed Single Audits, and to read any findings, search it on the Federal Audit Clearinghouse.
